New Philadelphia Museum on the American Revolution
Just when you thought Philadelphia’s streets couldn’t possibly hold anymore historical culture, the city prepares to open a new attraction right in the heart of the city: The Museum of the American Revolution. In 2017 the museum’s halls and galleries will be filled with the story of the American Revolution including exhibitions for Boston’s Liberty Tree, the story of the Native American Oneida tribe and their deliberations revolving around the United States’s debate of independence, the Battle of Brandywine, and of course the role that Philadelphia played in our country’s beginning.
Visitors can start their journey through the past in 1765 when the first protests against the British Parliament began. They can learn about the Boston Tea Party, and experience the accounts of one of our history’s biggest protest. Visitors can then follow the first General of the United States Army, George Washington, as he leads the nation to a victory, and independence, stopping along the way to honor all leaders of the war.
The construction of the museum itself led to the discovery of thousands of artifacts that help to illustrate the the lives of early Philadelphians. The site used to be home to a presumed illegal inn ran by Benjamin Humphreys, who was thought to be a toolmaker, but also had a reputation for running a “disorderly house” at the site of the new museum. The museum made sure to work alongside contractors to document the layout of the building, and to save any historical artifacts the construction team might have unearthed. Some these artifacts will be on display in the museum, and they offer a good look at what life was like for a normal citizen before and during the American Revolution.
The museum will only add to some of the city’s most historical buildings: Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, Franklin Court, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. Located on the historic and scenic Chestnut Street in Old Town, the museum is set to be three stories tall, expecting to be 118,000 square feet. The Museum of the American Revolution is a non-profit organization and has been underway since 2014, and is set to open its doors to the past in the Spring of 2017.
