Love science and engineering? Summer internships offer paid lab experience
With the days getting shorter, it seems that next summer is too far away to imagine. However, some students may need to start planning for summer internships now.
If you are a student with a love for science and engineering and wondering how you’ll spend next summer, consider these Department of the Navy internships. In addition to a generous stipend, you will gain valuable real world experience working alongside others in a Department of the Navy laboratory.
Kimberly Drake, technical specialist for the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station explained that the internships allows students to get a glimpse into what the job of a scientist or engineer is really like. “Ideally, the work students do helps them to decide to pursue a STEM career or helps them to decide which STEM career they’d like to pursue. We like to think students are exposed to new ideas and technologies that are not available to them in their schools. For example, most schools can’t offer them the opportunity to board a dry docked ship or to work with laser metrology equipment.”
The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten-week program that allows undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research at a participating Navy laboratory. To be eligible for the internship, applicants must be a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen. Applicants are selected based on academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and career and research interests. Additional details and requirements are available here.
The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) is open to high school students who have completed at least the ninth grade. A graduating senior is eligible to apply. Applicants must be 16-years-old to work in most laboratories. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen. If selected, students will spend eight weeks in the summer doing research at one of the Department of the Navy’s twenty-five laboratories. Additional details and requirements available here.
“Our summer program is more than just a job–it’s an intern program. We have social events all through the summer so that students can connect with each other and form a community that extends beyond the summer. We also have guest speakers, seminars, tours and workshops,” Drake said.
Please note that the deadline for both programs is December 19, 2014.
