Meet Our New Tutor: Zoe Schlanger
This month, Tutor Delphia welcomes newcomer Zoe Schlanger to our tutoring staff! A native to Portland Oregon, Zoe currently lives in West Philly and tutors Reading, Writing, and Art History.
Zoe contributes her passion for art and writing to an eternal love of arts and crafts, as well as a very insightful high school English teacher. Though she loved her art courses, she surprised herself freshman year when she took a class entitled Teaching and Tutoring Writing.
“I was interested in improving my own writing and also helping other people,” she says. “The class seemed like a good way to interact with more of my peers too.”
Zoe found that year that she had a gift in helping others with their writing. After completing the class, she went on to be a writing tutor at the Oberlin College Writing Center. She also tutored in the Art History Department where she took classes. Now that she has moved to Philadelphia, she continues to seek new opportunities to work with young learners and pass on her skills in her new home.
Zoe believes that the best teacher is someone who is passionate about the subject they teach and can spark that interest in their students. Her strength as a writing tutor comes from her understanding that each person writes in their own way. “I’m a big believer in freewriting to help you figure out what you want to say,” she says. Through helping her students “decode” their assignment, she can help them get unstuck. Together, they can overcome the struggles of not knowing how to begin and start writing.
What is Zoe’s best advice for students who are having trouble with their schoolwork? “Take a break! Ask for help!” she says. “Nothing that you do is as bad as you think it is. Learning that is really important for students. I think having someone that can give praise when they are struggling is really important.”
An artist, writer, historian, and teacher, we are so lucky to have her!
