My Approach to Tutoring
For the past three years I worked at a brand-new charter school in Bridgeport, Connecticut--first as an English Language Arts (ELA) tutor, and eventually as a coach to newer tutors. Our students came to us from severely underperforming Bridgeport public schools, and in desperate need of the four-days-a-week Math and ELA tutorial sessions that the school provided to each student. As an ELA tutor, I taught the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) curriculum, a program designed to bring students up to grade level. In addition to LLI, I am trained in the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment, Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills assessment, and the Six-Minute Solution intervention, and have also created and executed my own lesson plans. My experience in Bridgeport taught me the fundamentals of instruction and behavior management, which I was able to pass on to the tutors I supervised. I am committed to Tutor Delphia's mission to empower our students to "leave each session having achieved a deep feeling of accomplishment."
