My Approach to Tutoring
My extensive experience teaching composition, literature, film, creative writing, and Spanish, at Cornell University, Temple University, and CCP, is fueled by a commitment to teaching and student success. My pedagogical training began in 2012, when I took the course “Teaching Writing” at Cornell’s Knight Institute, followed by pedagogy workshops at The Center for Teaching Excellence, including “Active Learning Techniques,” and “Flipping the Classroom.” I participated twice in Cornell’s Peer Collaboration Program, sharing pedagogical strategies with my colleagues. This training allowed me to consider subjects more firmly from students’ point of view and to break down lessons into manageable segments. For example, in my composition classes, I divide lessons into constructing thesis statement, topic sentences, paragraphs, accumulative argument, observation, analysis, and synthesis. I then have students combine these skills in essays that go through several stages of peer review, individual conferences with the instructor, in-class workshops, and revision. In my classes I have found individual conferences to be invaluable, which is why I find tutoring so rewarding.
